Source, medium and campaign set
  • Use UTM links for links you place on other channels. Don't use them for links between pages on your own site: they overwrite where the visit really came from.
  • Pick names once and reuse them. Inconsistent tags split one campaign into several lines in your reports.

How to use it

Enter the page you're linking to and fill in the source, medium and campaign. The tool adds utm_ parameters and gives you a tagged link to copy. Analytics tools such as Google Analytics read those parameters to show which campaign sent each visit.

The five parameters

ParameterUse it forExample
utm_sourceWhere the traffic comes fromnewsletter, linkedin
utm_mediumThe kind of channelemail, social, cpc
utm_campaignThe campaign or promotionspring_launch
utm_termPaid search keywordsmeta description
utm_contentWhich link or versionheader_button

Keep it consistent

  • Use lowercase and underscores. Email, email and E-mail are three different values in reports.
  • Agree names once and reuse them, so one campaign doesn't split across many lines.
  • Don't use UTM links on your own site. Internal UTM links overwrite the visit's real source.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not directly, but tagged URLs create copies of a page. Use a canonical link so search engines treat them as one page.
