- Use lowercase and hyphens between words.
- Put the main keyword in it, and leave dates and numbers out unless they matter.
- Once a page is live, don't change its slug without a redirect.
How to use it
Type your page title and get a clean, lowercase, hyphenated slug: the last part of a page's address. Choose whether to drop filler words and how long the slug may be, then copy it.
What makes a good slug
- Short and readable. Aim for a few words that say what the page is about.
- The main keyword in it, without stuffing.
- Lowercase, with hyphens between words. Search engines read hyphens as word separators; underscores are treated differently.
- Plain characters. Accents are removed and symbols dropped, so the slug works everywhere.
- Stable. Once a page is live, avoid changing its slug. If you must, redirect the old address to the new one.
Should I put the date in the URL?
Usually not. A date makes the page look old as time passes and makes it harder to update. Use the date in the page itself instead.
