What is Title tag?

The title tag is the HTML title of a page. It is the clickable headline in search results and a strong signal of what the page is about.

Updated

The title tag is the <title> element in a page's HTML. Search engines show it as the blue headline in results, and browsers show it on the tab.

What makes a good one

  • Say what the page is about, with the main keyword near the front.
  • Keep it short enough to show. Around 60 characters, or roughly 600 pixels wide, is a safe limit on desktop; longer titles get cut off with an ellipsis.
  • Make it worth clicking. It competes with nine other results for the click.
  • Make it unique on every page.

Search engines sometimes rewrite titles they find weak or mismatched, so a clear, honest title is the best defence.

Title tag versus H1

The title tag appears in results; the H1 is the main heading on the page. They can match, but don't have to: the title is written for the results page, the H1 for someone already reading.
