# Search engine indexing

> How Seovyn tells supporting search engines about new pages the moment they go live, and what it does for each kind of destination.

A new page can sit unnoticed for days. **IndexNow** is an open protocol that lets a site tell search engines that a URL has appeared or changed, so they can crawl it sooner. Seovyn uses it automatically when a page goes live.

## Which search engines

IndexNow is used by Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver. Google doesn't use it: it finds your pages through your sitemap and [Search Console](/docs/search-console).

## How it works

IndexNow needs a small key file hosted on your own site, which proves the site is yours. Seovyn sets it up for you wherever it can, in a way that depends on where you publish:

| Destination | What Seovyn does |
|---|---|
| **Seovyn-hosted site** | Hosts the key itself. Nothing to do |
| **GitHub** | Commits a one-line text file, `public/{key}.txt`, straight to your base branch. It's the one repo write that skips the pull request, and the Publishing page says so |
| **WordPress** | Uploads the key file to your media library |
| **Webhook and the other platforms** | Can't be automated: the Publishing page shows the key and where to put it on your site |

A key only counts once Seovyn has fetched the file back from your site and confirmed it's live. Pings sent before that would just be rejected.

## Where to see it

Open **Publishing** and find **Search engine indexing**. It shows **Active** once the key is hosted and verified, or what's left to do.

## Good to know

- It sends only URLs of pages that have gone live.
- If your branch is protected and the key file can't be committed, indexing stays off for that account rather than failing your publishing.
- CDN-hosted media on a different host can't carry the key file, so WordPress sites that offload media may stay unverified.
